There’s no denying Bobby Portis has become a favorite among Milwaukee Bucks fans throughout the past few years. The thing is, the team’s defensive ceiling can go higher if let go of the one-time champion to acquire Keon Ellis in an interesting trade idea.
Ellis currently plays for the Sacramento Kings and has done so for the past two years as a reserve shooting guard. After going undrafted in the 2022 NBA draft, he signed a two-way contract with the Kings and has remained with the team ever since.

In his rookie season with the Kings, Ellis played in 16 games, averaging 1.5 points, 0.5 rebounds, 0.4 assists, and 0.3 steals per game. He shot 43.8% from the field and 50.0% from three-point range.
For the 2023-24 season, Ellis signed another two-way contract with the Kings. He has since become a more integral part of the team, starting 21 of the 57 games he has played. In the 2023-24 season, Ellis is averaging 5.4 points, 2.2 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 0.9 steals per game, while shooting 46.1% from the field and 41.7% from three-point range.
A couple of months ago, Ellis helped the Kings secure a play-in tournament victory over the Golden State Warriors, contributing 15 points, five assists, four rebounds, three steals, and three blocks. With his defensive prowess and improved offensive production, Ellis has established himself as a valuable role player for the Kings.
Milwaukee Bucks Parts Ways With Bobby Portis To Get Keon Ellis in Intriguing Trade Proposal

While Portis’ impact on both ends of the court can’t be overlooked, it can’t be denied he’s getting older and the Bucks need more youth on the roster. According to a mock trade written by Logan Struck for Sports Illustrated, Milwaukee lets go of the fan-favorite big man for a package with Ellis in it.
“Sacramento Kings receive: Bobby Portis
Milwaukee Bucks receive: Keon Ellis, Trey Lyles, 2025 second-round pick (via POR)Portis is undoubtedly a talented player, but Keon Ellis is one of the sole reasons the Kings were able to turn their defense around last season. Giving up 24-year-old Ellis and a solid backup forward in Trey Lyles is too much for Portis,” Struck wrote.
During the past four seasons, Portis has averaged 13.5 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 1.3 assists. However, with Patrick Beverley gone, the Bucks may need to adjust their defense to the wing. And since Milwaukee lacks the necessary assets to get Ellis, they may have to send Portis away to make the trade work.

While Portis has built a loyal following in Milwaukee, trading him might be the best thing to do. In return, the Bucks can potentially get a young guy with some upside to his future.
