The Green Bay Packers will be heading into the 2024 season with playoff (and possible Super Bowl) expectations. The 2023 season wound up being extremely productive for the future of this team. Jordan Love seemed to prove that he can certainly be “the guy” moving forward. Many young weapons around him proved to be difference makers, and the defense is getting an overhaul this off-season as we speak.
However, news surfaced today that will impact the franchise moving forward in a significant way.
The Green Bay Packers Make Franchise-Altering Announcement
According to the Green Bay Packers:
The Green Bay Packers today announced details of the search process for the organization’s next leader, who will succeed Mark Murphy, the Packers President and CEO since 2007. Murphy will formally retire in July 2025 when he turns 70, the mandatory retirement age for the position as required by organizational by-laws.
Susan Finco, Packers executive committee vice president and lead director, is chairperson for the search committee of the Packers Board of Directors. Dan Ariens, executive committee secretary and chair of the personnel and compensation committee, is vice chair for the search committee.
“Mark’s contributions to the organization have been tremendous,” Finco said. “From updating the corporate leadership structure to growing and diversifying revenue to increasing the meaningful impact of the Packers in the community, Mark continues to position the Packers for success. We look forward to his insightful leadership in the next year and a half.”
In addition to Finco and Ariens, the search committee is comprised of a diverse cross section of skills and industries represented on the board. It includes Mike Simmer (treasurer, executive committee), DJ Long (executive committee, personnel and compensation committee), Marcia Anderson (executive committee), Karl Schmidt (executive committee), Michael Barber (Packers Foundation chair), Jeff Joerres (investment committee chair), Eddie Garcia (former player, board member at-large), Robyn Davis (board member at-large) and Mike Daniels (board member at-large).
The search committee is working with Korn Ferry, a highly regarded national search firm the organization has worked with previously. The Korn Ferry team is led by Jed Hughes, who brings decades of high-level experience to the process and has worked with the Packers on other top-level searches, including the search that identified Murphy as the recommended candidate to succeed Bob Harlan in 2007.
The Packers Are Already Working On Their Next CEO
Since 2007, Murphy has been the Packers’ president and CEO
As he began his tenure with the Packers, Brett Favre was being replaced with 2005 first-round pick Aaron Rodgers. The Packers went 6-10 in Rodgers’ first season as the starting quarterback, which was also Murphy’s first season as president/CEO.
Two seasons later, the Packers won Super Bowl XLV 31-25 over the Steelers to bring home the Vince Lombardi Trophy. Rodgers went on to win four NFL MVP awards, the second-most in league history, and threw 475 touchdown passes over 15 seasons as the team’s starter.
During the 2018 season, Murphy fired Mike McCarthy and replaced him with current head coach Matt LaFleur. In his first three seasons in Green Bay, LaFleur became the only head coach to lead a team to three consecutive 13-win seasons. The 62 victories he had in his first five seasons tied him for the second most in NFL history, behind only George Seifert’s 62 with the 49ers in 1989-1993.
Between the on-field success and the development of TitleTown District (among many other off-the-field events), Murphy has had an incredible impact on the Packers franchise.
