The Green Bay Packers have three quarterbacks participating in their OTA practices this spring, and head coach Matt LaFleur made an eye-opening comment about it Wednesday. Love is the Packers’ named starting quarterback after Aaron Rodgers was traded to the New York Jets in April.
The Green Bay Packers have a quarterback battle
That leaves two other quarterbacks fighting for their spot on the depth chart this spring and likely summer in training camp. The Packers are returning Danny Etling to the team this season. He spent last season with the practice squad. The Packers drafted Sean Clifford in the fifth round of April’s draft.

LaFleur had talked about possibly bringing in a veteran quarterback to compete for a backup role on this year’s team during training camp. But for now, he wants to see how his current three compete this spring. (It could be advantageous for the Packers to do so after the NFL rule change that allows a third quarterback on the 53-man roster not to count against the 46-man gameday roster.)
Matt LaFleur: Jordan Love needs all the reps he can get
According to Ryan Wood with USA Today, LaFleur explained why he wants just three quarterbacks this spring. And it tells us a lot about where Love is at this point in the offseason. LaFleur said Love needs “a ton of reps,” and four quarterbacks wouldn’t give the current unit enough reps to progress this offseason.
#Packers are content with three QBs on their offseason roster, especially, as Matt LaFleur said, with Jordan Love needing “a ton of reps” this spring: “I just think it’s really, really difficult to get four guys the amount of reps that you need to do.”

Love does need to improve this spring with his young pass-catching teammates. However, as LaFleur has said, Love has years of experience leading OTAs, with Rodgers choosing to skip the voluntary portions of the Packers’ practice.

It’s somewhat troublesome the Packers need Love to gain that many reps this May and June that they can’t sign a player that would add value to the team. The Packers aren’t looking to coddle Love, but they are being cautious about his development here in year four.
