The Green Bay Packers have a number of first and second year players on their team who made a significant impact on the team in 2023. In fact, the Packers set a record for most reception yards in one season by first or second year receivers.
However, the Packers still have a number of exciting young players on the defensive side of the ball as well. Now, one of those players may be excited about the idea of playing with one of his college teammates in 2024.
First Year Green Bay Packers Stand Out Would Love To Play With His College Teammate
A lack of playing time certainly contributed to the question mark surrounding first-round edge rusher Lukas Van Ness earlier in the season. As the season progressed, Van Ness solidified his place in the rotation alongside Rashan Gary and others.
In total Van Ness finished his rookie season with 32 total tackles, 10 quarterback hits, four sacks, and one pass deflection. During the off-season, he is turning his focus on a new potential teammate. According to Matt Schneidman of The Athletic:
Cooper DeJean said his college teammate Lukas Van Ness has given him good insight during the pre-draft process.
“It’d be cool to play with Lukas again, for sure. I love my Iowa guys. He was a great teammate to play with. Just an absolute freak.”
Who Is Cornerback Cooper DeJean?
There are a number of options available to the Green Bay Packers with the 25th pick in the first round. In Cooper DeJean, they would get a prospect who was a key member of one of the most outstanding college football defensive units in 2023. Iowa Hawkeyes finished the season ranked fourth in the nation with just 14.8 points allowed per game and fifth with 170.7 passing yards allowed.
According to Pro Football Focus, DeJean has an overall rating of 77.4. During his three years with Iowa, he had seven interceptions, 13 passes defended, and 120 tackles.
One of the main focuses this off-season will be the defense. DeJean could be a step in that direction if they choose him in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft.
