The Green Bay Packers have been at the center of wide receiver trade rumors nearly every off-season in recent memory. In fact, this off-season may be the first one in years where the Packers aren’t predicted to make a trade for a veteran wide receiver. That is because the Packers have drafted extremely well at the wide receiver position over the last two years.
However, one of the Packers’ chief rival needs a lot of help at the wide receiver position. Yesterday, they did something about it.
The Green Bay Packers Chief Rival Trades For Veteran Wide Receiver Keenan Allen
According to ESPN’s Courtney Cronin:
CHICAGO — The Bears made their biggest splash in free agency Thursday night, sending a fourth-round pick to the Chargers in exchange for wide receiver Keenan Allen, the teams announced.
Allen, 31, is entering the final season of the four-year contract extension he signed in 2020 and is due a $5 million roster bonus Sunday. After declining to take a pay cut from the Chargers, he has a new home in the Bears’ offense opposite wideout DJ Moore.
A six-time Pro Bowl selection, Allen will reunite with wide receivers coach Chris Beatty, who coached the same position with the Chargers from 2021 to 2023. Allen caught a career-high 108 passes last season and posted the second-best output of his 11-year career with 1,243 yards and seven touchdowns. It marked the sixth time in Allen’s career that he crossed 1,000 receiving yards.
The Chicago Bears Still Have A Huge Quarterback Question Mark
Allen will be working with a new quarterback in 2024 after catching passes from Justin Herbert over the past four seasons. It is widely expected that Chicago will use the No. 1 draft pick on a quarterback, with USC’s Caleb Williams the consensus top pick.
Justin Fields will be entering his fourth NFL season and where he will play is completely up in the air. Ryan Poles, the Bears’ general manager, has suggested that he would be open to trading Fields, but with over a month until the draft, Fields, 25, remains on the roster.
It is very likely the Bears brought in Allen to give their young quarterback (whether that be Fields or a rookie) some stability in the passing game. Allen is 31 years old and is likely going to hang up his cleats for good within the next few seasons.
