Over the past few years, the Green Bay Packers have gone through a number of coaches. It would be impossible to overlook the firing of defensive coordinator Joe Barry as the biggest story of this off-season (so far). In preparation for the upcoming season, the Packers are overhauling their defensive coaching staff.
In the past few years, the Packers’ offensive coaching staff has also undergone some changes. Nathaniel Hackett was named head coach of the Denver Broncos, and Luke Getsy was named offensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears. Today, however, the Packers managed to retain a major piece of their offensive coaching staff.
The Green Bay Packers Retain Massive Coach For Jordan Love
Tyler Schisel of Wisconsin Sports Heroics reported on the Packers hiring a new member for their offensive coaching staff:
The Green Bay Packers have been making changes to their coaching staff at the beginning of the offseason. They are moving towards hiring younger coaches, which the fans have well received. On Saturday, it was officially announced that the Packers had brought on board a new coach for their offense.
Former NFL QB Sean Mannion is retiring after nine seasons with the Seattle Seahawks, Los Angeles Rams, and Minnesota Vikings. The Green Bay Packers have hired him onto the offensive staff for the 2024 season.
Many thought that this hire would mean the end for quarterbacks coach Tom Clements, that is not the case. According to reporter Tom Silverstein:
This does not mean QBs coach Tom Clements is retiring. He will be back on coach Matt LaFleur’s staff in 2024. Great learning experience for Mannion to work under LaFleur and Clements. Good for Jordan Love, too.
The Packers and Matt LaFleur are thrilled to hear this news. After 11 years as an offensive coordinator and QBs coach in Green Bay, Clements rejoined the staff in 2022. Clements has worked directly with Jordan Love since his return, and the Utah State product’s outstanding first season is a testament to his abilities as a talent developer.
In 2024, the pressure will be much higher after Love’s production led to a successful campaign in 2023. Clements retiring would’ve posed a huge obstacle to the young quarterback’s growth, making it imperative to continue his development.
In 2024, he appears poised to return, keeping an important member of Love’s coaching team
