The Green Bay Packers will be entering the 2024 season with aspirations of being a Super Bowl contending team. The 2023 season was massive for this young Packers team. Not only did they find their franchise quarterback in Jordan Love, but they proved their young offense can put up points on any defense.
However, the 2024 off-season could prove to be one where the Packers add yet another incredible weapon for this Love-led offense.
Elite Offensive Weapon Could Be Available For The Green Bay Packers And Jordan Love This Off-Season
Freddie Boston of Lombardi Ave highlighted how Saquon Barkley could be a reality for the Packers:
The Green Bay Packers could be in the market for a running back this offseason.
They reportedly had “legitimate interest” in trading for Indianapolis Colts All-Pro Jonathan Taylor earlier this season. If AJ Dillon leaves in free agency this offseason, the need for running back help will increase.
Green Bay shouldn’t overpay at the running back position and almost certainly won’t. But if an opportunity to land a game-changer at a reasonable price becomes available, they should take it.
Packers could land free agent Saquon Barkley in reasonable deal
The Packers are fully aware of how talented Saquon Barkley is. He has rushed for 156 yards and three touchdowns in his past two games against Green Bay.
He could become available at the start of the new league year. According to ESPN’s Jordan Raanan, there’s a good chance the Giants will let Barkley “test the open market.”
Could The Packers Afford Barkley?
According to Pro Football Focus and Over the Cap, Barkley is expected to sign a two-year, $22 million contract ($11 million APY) with $15 million guaranteed.
As far as the salary cap and potential spending in free agency are concerned, the Packers will have more flexibility this offseason.
It is important to remember that the term “flexibility” is relative. As Aaron Rodgers’ $40-plus million dead cap hit is off the books, the Packers will have more spending power in 2024 than last offseason. In spite of this, there will still be work to do on the salary cap before free agency starts.
Over the Cap currently has the Packers $2.85 million over their projected salary cap for 2024. For the Packers to cover normal operating expenses, such as signing the incoming draft class, building the practice squad, and having reserves for in-season spending, Ken Ingalls, who independently tracks the Packers’ cap situation, estimates that roughly $30 million in cap space will be needed.
However, that $30 million figure does not include any free agent signings. By renegotiating contracts, extending contracts, or cutting veterans, the Packers have the means to create cap space, the question is how far are they willing to push it beyond 2025?
A player like Barkley could be enough to convince them to make some major moves within their own roster.
