The Green Bay Packers are in the potential need for a running back, and the latest name to come up is Denver Broncos running back Javonte Williams. Williams just faced the Packers defense in Week 7, and the Broncos won that game over Green Bay 19-17.
Javonte Williams, on the year, has rushed for 272 yards on 63 carries and zero touchdowns. He is averaging 4.3 yards per carry. Williams is 24 years old, and after the 2023 season ends, he will have one more year remaining on his contract.
Shawn Lealos of givemesports.com thinks that the Packers and Williams can be a very good match. He wrote in his column:
“The Green Bay Packers need a strong running game to help new quarterback Jordan Love find his groove. Aaron Jones is a top-tier running back, but he hasn’t been healthy this season and A.J. Dillon has been a massive disappointment. The team needs someone that they can rely on when Jones is down, and someone who can compliment him when healthy, and with just one touchdown and 3.2 yards per carry this year, Dillon’s not getting it done. Javonte Williams looked like a star as a rookie in Denver in 2021, but he was hurt for most of 2022. Now, he isn’t doing much this year on a Broncos team that is always playing from behind, but the Broncos need to make some trades and the Packers could use someone like Williams.”
Aaron Jones has been struggling with staying on the field this year with his hamstring issues. A.J. Dillon has been massively underachieving. Emanuel Wilson has not received enough snaps, either. A change in the running back room with Javonte Williams would not be a bad thing for the Packers.
The Green Bay Packers’ Fanbase May Criticize Management If they trade for Javonte Williams
It may not be a bad thing for the Packers to get another talented running back, but do they really need a player who is injury-prone? General manager Brian Gutekunst has been criticized before with player personnel through the NFL Draft and trades. If they were to get Williams via trade, there would for sure be backlash from the Packers fanbase.
They have been complaining about how Aaron Jones and wide receiver Christian Watson have been injury-prone this season. For the most part, Williams has missed one game this season for the 2-5 Denver Broncos. Javonte Williams would be an upgrade as the second running back over AJ Dillon, but the Packers fanbase would find a way to complain about the move anyway.
