Green Bay Packers Greatest Player #81- Jim Carter
Jim Carter was a legendary athlete from the state of Minnesota. He went to Minnesota of the Big Ten and played two varsity sports: hockey and football.
He was such a good hockey player that he was drafted by the Saint Paul Fighting Saints (a former professional hockey team outside of the NHL). Carter instead chose to pursue a career in football and was drafted by the Packers in the third round (68th overall pick) of the 1970 NFL Draft.
Carter was a linebacker and since the NFL did not track tackling stats back then, we do not have his career or single-season tackle stats. However, he did finish ninth in Defensive Player of the Year voting in 1972 and was named to the Pro Bowl in 1973.
In total, Carter spent nine seasons with the Packers, though he missed the entire 1976 season due to an injured arm. Perhaps being off the field was not a good thing for him.
Later in his life, when Carter was a finalist for a spot on the University of Minnesota’s Board of Regents, it came out that he committed sexual harassment during that 1976 season. He did not get the spot on the board.
Following his playing career, Carter bought multiple car dealerships in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. He turned these into highly successful and respected businesses. As a result, Carter was one of five finalist for Time Magazine‘s Quality Dealer of the Year in 1988.
Carter has since retired from business and resides with his wife in California.
