The Green Bay Packers are looking to take the next step towards Super Bowl contention in 2024. After Jordan Love proved that he is a legitimate NFL starter following Green Bay’s trade of Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets last offseason, the Packers returned to the postseason and even upset the Dallas Cowboys in the Wild Card round. This shocked many national pundits as they were the youngest team in the league last season.

    Packers News

As the Packers look towards the 2024 NFL Draft, there are a variety of needs the team needs to address. On defense, especially, the team needs to look at the safety position. Darnell Savage, Jonathan Owens, and Rudy Ford are all free agents, leaving Anthony Johnson Jr. as the only notable player at the position. On offense, running back and offensive line are two areas of need. That being said, Packers Hall of Famer Donald Driver wants the team to look at a particular wide receiver early in the draft.

Donald Driver Wants the Green Bay Packers to Take Xavier Worthy in the 2024 NFL Draft

Xavier Worthy, who played three seasons as Texas, was the talk of the NFL Scouting Combine after he broke the record for the 40-yard dash, running it in a blazing 4.21 seconds. Of course, this show of speed had fans from many NFL fanbases calling for their teams to target Worthy in the draft. Former Packers wide receiver Donald Driver, who is the franchise’s all-time leader in receiving yards, was among them:

This is wild…. Crazy Crazy Speed… come on pack. @packers https://t.co/tQQgEvUZPn

    — Donald Driver (@Donald_Driver80) March 3, 2024

It should be noted that the Packers did meet with Worthy at the combine.

Worthy is coming off of a season at Texas which saw him post a career-high in receiving yards, eclipsing the 1,000-yard mark for the first time in his career:

    Year Receptions Yards Touchdowns
    2021 62 981 12
    2022 60 760 9
    2023 75 1,014 5

Will the Green Bay Packers Draft Xavier Worthy?

As mentioned earlier, the Packers have a variety of needs that they need to address this offseason, and quite frankly, wide receiver is not one of them:

    Player Receptions Yards Touchdowns
    Romeo Doubs 59 674 8
    Christian Watson 28 422 5
    Jayden Reed 64 793 8
    Dontayvion Wicks 39 581 4
    Malik Heath 15 125 1
    Bo Melton 16 218 1
    Luke Musgrave 34 352 1
    Tucker Kraft 31 355 2
    Ben Sims 4 21 1

All of the players in the table above were first or second year players in 2023. They are only going to get better (and, hopefully, healthier).

Worthy is projected to be a late first round or early second round pick, and while the Packers are known for finding great wide receivers in the second round (Jordy Nelson, Davante Adams, Randall Cobb, Greg Jennings), they simply do not really value the position in the first round

Sure, Brian Gutekunst tried to trade up to take Christian Watson in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, but that was after he drafted Quay Walker and Devonte Wyatt.

If Worthy falls to the Packers at pick 41 in the second round, it is very possible that they would take him. However, it does not appear likely that he will. If he does fall to the second round, the Packers could trade up to take him, as they did end up doing with Watson in 2022.

That being said, if Worthy is available at pick 25, Green Bay probably will not take him there. Instead, they will address cornerback, safety, or the offensive line with that pick.
