The Green Bay Packers could very well be looking to add players in free agency this off-season. While an offensive player (like running back or offensive lineman) is possible, it is more likely to be a defensive stud. New defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley has made it clear that there will be a new mindset in Green Bay on that side of the ball.
As it turns out, there is one new coach for the Packers who coached a premier free agent in college.

Matt Schneidman of The Athletic reported earlier today how the Packers have a specific tie to free agent Safety Xavier McKinney:

Free-agent safety Xavier McKinney has been linked to the Green Bay Packers all offseason. Jeff Hafley’s scheme desperately needs at least one premier safety, and McKinney is one of the best available.
How Likely Is It That The Packers Sign A Free Agent Like Xavier McKinney?
McKinney, who is just 24, was Pro Football Focus’ fourth-ranked safety in 2023. Both in coverage and in the box, McKinney finished the year with top-10 grades.
McKinney intercepted five passes in 2021 and three this year. In addition, he is an excellent tackler.
A public criticism of defensive coordinator Wink Martindale by McKinney this season ruffled some feathers, however, it certainly exenteated his desire to win. Spotrac projects McKinney’s next contract to be in the range of five years, $52 million.
The Packers certainly have made it known they are open to adding to their team through free agency this off-season, however, is a high priced target like McKinney, who has ties to a current Packers coach, someone they’re willing to commit a large contract to?
Time will tell.
