The Green Bay Packers will face a struggling Russell Wilson and the Denver Broncos on Sunday on the road. Wilson has been better in year two with Denver, but it almost feels as if the losses continue to pile up for them. It feels like a Russell Wilson benching may come sooner rather than later.
Russell Wilson last week only threw for 95 yards passing, one touchdown, and two interceptions in a 19-8 loss in Week 6 against the Kansas City Chiefs. So far this season, he has completed 65.9% of his passes for 1,305 yards passing, 12 touchdowns, and four interceptions. Wilson’s current backup quarterback is Jarrett Stidham.
It would be interesting to see when Denver would decide to make that move. Some fans on social media were already calling for it to happen, and it could possibly happen.
In a recent mailbag, ESPN insiders Jeremy Fowler and Dan Graziano analyzed when a benching can happen or other options with Russell Wilson as well.
Graziano said:
“I think the Broncos have to bite the bullet and cut him before the 2025 guarantees kick in next March. Designate him a post-June 1 cut, take the $35.4 million dead money hit in 2024, another $49 million or so in 2025 and draft a QB to rebuild around. This is a bigger project than I think coach Sean Payton expected, and a reset is probably the best way to go. If you’re going to have a quarterback on a rookie deal for the next couple of seasons, you can afford to absorb those dead money hits.”
The Denver Broncos are currently projected to pick third in the 2024 NFL Draft. With the Chicago Bears currently having the first two picks in the 2024 NFL Draft, it is very possible that they would select quarterback Drake Maye from North Carolina in this situation unless another NFL team jumped them to the number two selection.
Russell Wilson Getting Benched During the Middle of the Green Bay Packers Game This Sunday Would Be a Story Line
If Joe Barry’s Packers defense can actually play well like the last matchup, there is maybe a chance that Sean Payton decides to pull the plug on Russell Wilson and put him on the bench. The second that happens, Twitter is going to go crazy, and there are going to be massive reactions to Jarrett Stidham coming into the ball game.
This will be worth watching this weekend to see if Wilson plays the game of his life or if he looks horrendous. What if Russell Wilson gets hurt instead of just being benched in general? Fowler added:
“Plus, that 2025 salary is guaranteed for injury, which deepens the intrigue if the Broncos continue to slide this season. Would Payton pull him for Jarrett Stidham? The Denver coach seemed smitten when discussing Stidham’s ceiling at the NFL owners meeting in March. That would be a drastic move, but one that could make sense on a financial level if the losses pile up into mid-to-late November.”
It would be interesting to see how this whole Russell Wilson drama is going to play out with the Denver Broncos. It all begins for them when the Green Bay Packers come to the Mile High City.
