The Green Bay Packers are heading into the 2024 off-season with a few massive salary cap hits. David Bakhtiari currently tops that list at over $40M for the 2024 season alone. It is pretty obvious that the Packers won’t go into the regular season with a cap hit of $40M for a left tackle, however, they likely won’t even go into the new league year with that type of cap hit.
The Green Bay Packers Are Expected To Make A Decision About David Bakhtiari Very Soon
According to ESPN’s Rob Demovsky:
Packers GM Brian Gutekunst said he hasn’t made a move w/LT David Bakhtiari cuz he doesn’t like to make decisions before he has to.
He certainly doesn’t want to carry his cap number once the league starts.
“Like to have a decision before that,” BG said just now at the combine.
The new league year starts on March 13th, 2024.
By restructuring the contract of edge rusher Rashan Gary on Monday, the Packers created some cap space. By parting ways with veteran left tackle David Bakhtiari, they could create a lot more. However, that doesn’t seem set in stone.
Like prevously mentioned, Bakhtiari will have a cap number of more than $40 million, which would be a lot even if he hadn’t missed 38 of the team’s last 51 regular season games. Gutekunst told reporters on Tuesday that the team has not made a decision about Bakhtiari yet. Cutting him would free up more than $20 million in cap space.
Gutekunst stated the team would not keep Bakhtiari at his current cap number into the new league year, however, he did not comment on the team’s desire to keep him in Green Bay.
David Bakhtiari is still one of the best left tackles in the NFL when healthy. That is good news for the Packers on two fronts. Either he yields a premium draft pick in a trade, or he is healthy enough to protect Jordan Love’s blindside for at least another year.
