The Green Bay Packers and Arizona Cardinals are two teams with intriguing storylines in 2023. The Packers are in the midst of seeing if Jordan Love is the franchise quarterback they hope he is. The Cardinals were once thought to be a possible contender in the NFC going into this season, however, after multiple questionable moves the team is now considered a top candidate for the number one overall draft pick in 2023. Of course, that will largely depend on when/if Kyler Murray comes back.
One thing seems to be clear though. If the Cardinals continue to disappoint this season, many believe they could be heavy sellers at the trade deadline. That is where the Packers could come in.
Green Bay Packers Land Wide Receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown In Massive Proposal Trade With The Arizona Cardinals
Matthew Schmidt of NFL Analysis Network highlighted out this scenario could work:
For several years now, the Green Bay Packers’ receiving corps has been pretty thin. You have to figure that one of the primary reasons why Aaron Rodgers left for greener pastures (no pun intended) by heading to the New York Jets was because of the fact that the Packers failed to put enough receiving talent around him in the latter stages of his Green Bay tenure.
To be fair, the Packers have added some wide receivers through the draft over the last couple of years, using second-round picks on Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs in 2022 and selecting Jayden Reed with the 50th overall pick this past spring. However, even with Green Bay’s recent additions, its passing game could still use some assistance.
Enter Arizona Cardinals wide out Marquise “Hollywood” Brown.
In the not too distant past, the Cardinals’ aerial attack appeared to be on the come up, but with Kyler Murray’s future in Arizona in doubt and DeAndre Hopkins no longer in the desert, times have changed, meaning that Brown could be a potential trade piece. With the Packers needing a receiver, the land of cheeseheads could represent a potential destination.
Brown, who played his collegiate football at the University of Oklahoma, is a burner who was taken by the Baltimore Ravens with the 25th overall pick of the 2019 NFL Draft. Because the Ravens are a run-heavy offense, Brown’s touches were rather limited in Baltimore.
He did break out with 91 receptions for 1,008 yards and six touchdowns in 2021, but was ultimately traded to the Cardinals that ensuing offseason because he wasn’t too enthralled with his role.
What Would Marquise Brown Bring To The Packers Offense?
Opposing defenses would face trouble defending against Brown (4.32 40-yard dash) as well as Christian Watson (4.36 40-yard dash) when he returns. Brown is entering the final year of his rookie contract, which is the fifth-year option for $13.4 million.
From 2020 to 2022 Brown has averaged 14.7 games played per season, 72 receptions, 828 yards, and 5.7 touchdowns per season. Through two games in 2023 he has recorded 9 receptions for 82 yards and one touchdown. That type of production added to the Packers roster would be noticeable.
Lastly, Brown is 26-years-old. He would fit right in with the “youth movement” the Packers seem to be committing to this year. Schmidt mentioned offering a 2024 second-round draft pick for him. That would make sense as the Packers love spending second-round picks on wide receivers.
