The Green Bay Packers are excited for the future of their organization. The 2023 season showed the league that the Packers won’t be entering a rebuild mode any time soon. Jordan Love and this young offense started firing on all cylinders at the end of the season which propelled them into the second round of the playoffs.
Kicker Anders Carlson had an up and down year, to say the least. However one recent statement about their young kicker will have fans excited about his future.
The Green Bay Packers Have To Be Excited About Anders Carlson After This Statement
TV analyst Jay Feely, who overcame adversity early in his career, is in Las Vegas for the Super Bowl broadcast. Despite missing eight field goals his rookie year, Feely went on to have a 14-year career. He spoke at length regarding Anders Carlson:
“All of a sudden it was like, I am in the NFL,” Feely said. “I didn’t really believe that I belonged yet. It took me a year or two to believe, truly in my heart, that I can do this and I belong here.
“My worst game of my career, I was with the Giants, against Seattle. And Saturday Night Live did a spoof about me after that. And you know you’re dealing with this pressure and the failure of helping your team win a game. That’s the hard part. But when you get through that failure and it doesn’t break you, it allows you to lose some of that fear of failure. And it allows you to actually go out there and be better.
“Guys struggle in their first year, and they learn how to handle the pressure, and they learn how to handle the ups and downs of the NFL. How close those games are. Because when you’re in college and you miss a kick and when you win by 30, it doesn’t really matter. But because NFL games are so close, closer than ever, when you miss one of those kicks it’s easy to look back. You lost by two and missed a field goal. You could have won the game with that play.
“But I think Anders is really talented. You look at his brother, who is now one of the best kickers in the NFL, who got cut after two games in his rookie year. They gave up on him. And so i think you have to have a long-term perspective with guys and allow them to become the best they can become.”
The Packers will certainly stick with Carlson for a few seasons in hopes they found their next long-term kicker. Mason Crosby became the starter for the Packers during the 2007 season. He didn’t make more than 80% of his field goals in a season until 2011.
