Green Bay Packers: 5th Year Option Salary for Jordan Love Officially Determined by NFL

The Green Bay Packers are facing quite the decision in the coming weeks. Aaron Rodgers has yet to make a decision on whether or not he will play in the NFL in 2023. If he does decide to come back, the front office will be faced with deciding on what to do, if anything, with 2020 first round pick Jordan Love. The Packers have until May 1, 2023 to decide whether or not they will exercise Love’s fifth year option. We have known for a while that picking up Love’s fifth year option would cost the Packers around $20 million. Today, the NFL officially set the fifth year option totals, giving the team and fans an exact number.

The Green Bay Packers Will Have to Eventually Choose Between Aaron Rodgers and Jordan Love

NFL analyst Albert Breer shared the following charts on Twitter that explain the different tiers of fifth year options for 2020 first round picks:

The table that is relevant to Green Bay is the last one for players players who did not achieve any criterion. In other words, this is for players who have not played very much since being drafted. As seen on that table, the fifth year option salary for a quarterback in that tier is $20,272,000.

As mentioned, the Green Bay front office anticipated the cost to pick up Love’s option to be around $20 million. Now, where it gets complicated is when the option would take effect in 2024. That year, Aaron Rodgers (if he is still on the team) will carry a cap hit of $40,701,667. If they were to carry both Rodgers and Love on the roster in 2024, that would mean they would have close to $61 million tied up in the quarterback position.

Per David Lombardi of The Athletic, NFL salary cap experts expect the 2024 cap to be around $260 million.

Of course, there are plenty of rumors that would suggest Rodgers is going to be traded this offseason. That is if he decides to come back to play in 2023.
