Green Bay Packers: Brian Gutekunst Comments on Jordan Love Hold In, Contract Negotiations

The Green Bay Packers report for training camp today. On the eve of the first day of camp, it was reported that three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kenny Clark had signed a three-year $64 million contract extension to continue his run as the longest-tenured player on the team. Going into the offseason, there was some speculation that 2024 could be his last season in Green Bay. That is no longer the case.

As welcome as the Clark contract extension news was, it was not the most anticipated move of its kind. The most noteworthy extension, that of quarterback Jordan Love, has yet to be completed. While the two sides have both expressed their desires to get a deal done before the start of training camp, nothing has been signed yet.

Earlier this morning, Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst met with the media ahead of the first training camp practice. During that press conference, he revealed that Love is present in Green Bay. However, he and the team were informed by Love’s agents that the star quarterback will not take part in any practices until a deal is signed.

Jordan Love will not practice until he has a new deal, Brian Gutekunst says. Love’s camp informed Packers of that decision Saturday.

Gutekunst says a deal could get done in the coming days, but you never know. Says big deals take time.

While he will not be practicing himself, Love will be present at practice and involved in team meetings. Such a decision by the Packers’ franchise quarterback shows that a deal must not be far away. It also shows a noticeable difference between him and his predecessor, Aaron Rodgers, who would not show up if he was in a dispute with the front office.

On the importance of getting Love signed to a long-term contract extension, Gutekunst said, “I think it’s really important for us. At the same time, the thing that I have confidence in is that we both want the same thing. We want Jordan here for a long time, give him that stability for him, and it gives us some stability for our group as well. I’m optimistic. These are big deals. It takes time. They’re not as easy as some people may think.

“I feel we’re close, but no real timetables as far as how long it’s going to take.”

Neither Love nor his agents have said anything in regard to his hold in.

As stated previously, the fact that Love is present at training camp is a positive sign. Both sides want a contract to get done, so it will get done.
