The Green Bay Packers signed Devin Funchess to a two-year deal prior to the 2020 season. However, Funchess opted out of the 2020 season due to COVID. This season, Funchess took a pay cut in order to stay with the team. During the offseason, he even set a world record when he caught a pass thrown from a helicopter. Unfortunately, Funchess could not stay healthy and found himself mired in controversy after he used a racial slur during a preseason press conference. Ultimately, the Packers put Funchess on Injured Reserve and then released him. He played no regular season games for the Packers. Now, Devin Funchess will get a chance to play for one of the Packers’ NFC rivals: the San Francisco 49ers.
Devin Funchess Has Not Played a Regular Season Game Since 2019
Unfortunately, Devin Funchess has had a hard time staying on the field in recent seasons. Once a durable player with the Carolina Panthers, Funchess signed with the Indianapolis Colts in 2019 and was limited to just one game. As mentioned previously, he opted out of the 2020 season due to concerns with COVID. This decision led many fans to criticize Funchess and his commitment to football. Earlier this spring, Funchess revealed that he had lost several friends and family members to COVID and did not feel it was right for him to risk it last season.
After a relatively strong preseason, Funchess was placed on IR. With the Packers’ depth at wide receiver, the team decided to part ways with the veteran wide receiver. Since his release from Green Bay, Funchess has not landed with any team until San Francisco came calling.
It has been a long time since Devin Funchess has been able to put together a complete season. Hopefully this new start on the 49ers practice squad is the launching point he needs for the next chapter of his career.
