David Stearns was hired on Tuesday by the New York Mets, and Pete Alonso’s name started swirling once again. Stearns will be the new President of Baseball Operations for the franchise once the regular season ends. He had an excellent run with the Milwaukee Brewers, but Stearns wanted to pursue something different in his MLB career.
He is only 38 years old. David Stearns has been with the Milwaukee Brewers since 2015, and they have been to the postseason several times. Milwaukee’s best year was in 2018, when they reached the NLCS before losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers in seven games.
Over the years, he has built up an excellent farm system, and hopefully, he can do the same with the New York Mets. Speaking of trying to build up the farm system, will he trade Mets first baseman Pete Alonso this offseason?
Well, ESPN’s Jeff Passan said on David Stearns becoming the President of Baseball Operations for the Mets:
“One of Stearns first orders of business will be assessing the trade market for first baseman Pete Alonso, who is set to hit the free agency market following the 2024 season.”
David Stearns and the Milwaukee Brewers Tried Acquiring Pete Alonso During the MLB Trade Deadline
During the trade deadline, it appeared as if a deal between the Mets and the Brewers for Alonso wasn’t even close. They will try and revisit a potential trade during the offseason. Pete Alonso is 28 years old, and he has a .224 batting average with 44 home runs and 105 RBIs so far this season. He also has four stolen bases, and one caught stealing attempt.
Alonso has appeared in 136 games this season for the franchise and, so far in his career, has played in 666 career games with the New York Mets. In those games, he has a .253 batting average with 190 home runs and 485 RBIs, along with 14 stolen bases and two caught stealing attempts.
There will be other teams as well this offseason that will call David Stearns and the New York Mets. Another team that was in on him was the Chicago Cubs. It would be interesting if Stearns traded Alonso to the team he used to work for in the offseason. This is going to be one of the biggest stories in the MLB before the 2024 season begins.
If the New York Mets do trade Pete Alonso, it would signal a rebuild for the franchise, even though they have already kind of kickstarted it during the MLB trade deadline. It feels like a 50-50 proposition as to whether or not Stearns will trade him this offseason. There are good reasons to keep him, and there are good reasons to trade him.
Billy Eppler will also most likely stick around next season as the general manager, but the future of Buck Showalter as the team’s manager feels kind of murky. The future of Alonso with the Mets also kind of feels murky with the Mets as well.
