The Cincinnati Reds now have consecutive walk-off victories against the Chicago Cubs. Their first walk-off came during the second game of a double header on Friday, September 1 when Noelvi Marte hit a two-out single in the ninth to win the game. A day later Hunter Renfroe, who they claimed off of waivers a few days prior, used hustle to beat out a double play ball as the winning run crossed the plate.
Newest member of the Cincinnati Reds Hunter Renfroe uses hustle for a walk-off victory against the Chicago Cubs.
During both of these walk-off victories the Reds trailed the Cubs by one run entering the ninth inning. Friday night’s heroics came off of Cubs closer Adbert Alzolay and on Saturday both Mark Leiter Jr and Jose Cuas pitched in the ninth.
With these consecutive victories the Reds improved their record to 71-67 whereas the Cubs fell to 72-64. Sunday’s finale will be the teams final match up against one another. The Reds have already clinched the season series/playoff tie breaker for they have won seven games against the Cubs and lost five.
Both teams are chasing the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central division. Chicago currently holds the second National League Wild Card spot and holds a two game advantage over Cincinnati. The San Francisco Giants, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Miami Marlins all remain in the hunt as well.
