After missing out on the playoffs last season, the Brewers off-season is off to a controversial start. Most recently, Hunter Renfroe was traded away to the Angles for three pitchers. This left a sour taste in the mouths of some fans for Renfroe was one of the team’s most productive hitters last season. It also raises the question as to which Brewers may be traded away next.
Which 2 Brewer players could be traded away next?
According to multiple reports, Kolten Wong is expected to be traded this off-season. The Brewers picked up his $10 MM club option earlier. Between his price tag and having just one year left on his contract, he could be a trade candidate. The Mariners are one team that have been reportedly calling to check in on his availability.
Should Wong be traded, it would provide an opportunity for Brice Turang. Turang was added to the 40-man roster and could eventually take over for Wong at second base. Matt Arnold’s moves so far this off-season point towards the Crew giving their young prospects chances next year and parting ways with Wong would be another way of showing that.
Keston Hiura is another player that could also be traded. Hiura was tendered a contract for 2023, but doesn’t have a clear role on the roster. He split time at first base with Rowdy Tellez in 2022 and also played in the minor leagues. Unfortunately Hiura is now out of minor league options, which may make him expendable this off-season.
Over the past two seasons, Hiura has not performed to expectations. He played much better in 2022 when compared to 2021, but he has not found the same success that he initially had when he debuted in 2019. At this point the Brewers may only be able to get a young prospect in return for him, but it would be better than losing him in waivers during the season.
