We’ve all seen this rodeo before. Aaron Rodgers goes back and forth about his retirement only to return to the Green Bay Packers for another season. The main difference this summer, however, is that the four-time MVP decided to turn down an opportunity for one more run with the Packers in favor of a move to the New York Jets.
Aaron Rodgers Reveals Why He Joined New York Jets
Obviously, Rodgers has his reasons for picking the Jets over the Packers. For one, the 39-year-old clearly feels that his time has run out in Green Bay after 17 long years. However, Rodgers also revealed in an interview that there were two people in particular that made him want to take on a new chapter of his career in New York:
“Better. Yeah, definitely better,” Rodgers said on a recent episode of WFAN Sports Radio 101.9 FM’s Boomer & Gio radio program (h/t Logan Mullen of Audacy). “This has been better than I was even daydreaming about sitting in that hole in the ground thinking about what my life could be. Because I contemplated retirement, I contemplated coming back, and the Jets were always the team that was most interesting to me because of Robert (Saleh), because of Nathaniel (Hackett), because of the way they whooped our ass last year.”
This is not a dig at Packers head coach Matt LaFleur, who Rodgers built a friendship with as well during their time together in Green Bay. Or at least I don’t think it is.
Needless to say, however, Rodgers holds Jets head coach Robert Saleh in very high regard. So much so, that he’s now decided to take his talents to New York in order to play for Saleh. Hackett, on the other hand, has a long history with Rodgers. They found a lot of success during their tenure with the Packers, and it is clear that the new Jets offensive coordinator played a key role in Rodgers’ decision to head to the Big Apple.
At this point, Aaron Rodgers is looking to make a new set of history with the Jets. He’s pretty much done it all in Green Bay, and this new challenge in New York is something he’s very much looking forward to:
“To walk in with a lot of respect from the guys and to now start the friendships that we’ve made with various guys on the team and then to just be a part of something special that has a chance. Late in your career to be able to come into work every day and know you have a chance to be in the mix in February is a special feeling,” he said.
