Will Aaron Rodgers Retire? It’s Decision Week for the Packers Quarterback: Latest Rumors and Options

We have finally arrived at what has been widely regarded as the week in which Aaron Rodgers will make his decision for the 2023 NFL season. Last year, Rodgers signed his three-year $150 million contract on March 8. At the time, many assumed that the contract ensured that he would end his career with Green Bay, especially after winning MVP Awards in 2020 and 2021. However, after a 2022 season that saw Rodgers have a down year by his standards and the Packers finish 8-9 and miss the playoffs, that is not a certainty anymore. Perhaps it never was.

Will Aaron Rodgers Decide to Return to the Packers for a 19th Season, and Will the Packers Want Him?

It may be the end of an Era for the Green Bay Packers

One option is that Rodgers will decided to return to the Packers, the team with whom he was drafted and has spent the last 18 seasons. Green Bay could welcome him back with open arms, ask him to restructure that contract to free up some money, and load up for one final, final, final run with the future Hall of Famer.

But do the Packers want him back? While head coach Matt LaFleur and general manager Brian Gutekunst have both stated they want Rodgers back, what else are they expected to say? They have also said, in the same breath, that Jordan Love is ready to be a starting quarterback in the NFL. So which is it? If Rodgers does opt in for 2023, what does that mean for Jordan Love?

Aaron Rodgers Very Well Could Be Traded

If the Packers are set on rolling with Jordan Love after three years (the same amount of time Rodgers sat behind Brett Favre), the four-time MVP could be traded. That is, of course, if he decides he wants to play in 2023. Rodgers does not have a no-trade clause in his contract and can be moved to any team. If this is the course the two parties take, the teams that could trade for Rodgers have been written about in rumors for weeks now. These teams include:

    • Las Vegas Raiders
    • New York Jets
    • Carolina Panthers
    • Tennessee Titans

Here is a rundown of the betting odds for which team Rodgers will play for in 2023.

    2023 Team Odds Implied Chance
    Las Vegas Raiders -250 71.4%
    New York Jets +125 44.4%
    Green Bay Packers +250 28.6%
    Tennessee Titans +800 11.1%
    San Francisco 49ers +1400 6.7%
    Retirement +2000 4.8%
    New England Patriots +2200 4.3%
    Indianapolis Colts +2500 3.8%
    Carolina Panthers +2500 3.8%
    Tampa Bay Buccaneers +3300 2.9%
    New York Giants +4000 2.4%

It is sure to be an interesting week for the Packers and their fans. Buckle up.
