The Milwaukee Brewers are in an interesting spot as the July 30 MLB trade deadline approaches. They have been one of the top three teams in the National League all year, but have operated short handed from a pitching perspective and recently found out that Christian Yelich will miss some time with another back injury. That being said one National MLB Insider from Yahoo Sports linked Milwaukee to one particular Los Angeles Angels trade target.
Yahoo Sports MLB Insider Russell Dorsey linked the Milwaukee Brewers to one Los Angeles Angels trade target.
Per Russell Dorsey the Brewers are one of five teams that have called the Angels inquiring about left-handed starting pitcher Reid Detmers. Detmers was a former 10th overall pick in the 2020 MLB Draft and had been a key member of the Angels starting rotation each of the past two seasons (3.77 ERA over 25 starts in 2022 and 4.48 ERA over 28 starts in 2023). This year he has struggled mightily (6.14 ERA over 12 starts) and was optioned to Triple-A in early June.
Which other teams besides the Milwaukee Brewers were linked to Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Reid Detmers?
As mentioned Russell Dorsey listed five total teams whom all called about Reid Detmers. The other teams besides the Brewers were the Los Angeles Dodgers, Arizona Diamondbacks, Cleveland Guardians, and Houston Astros. Dorsey also revealed that the Angels have fielded calls on southpaw Tyler Anderson and outfielder Taylor Ward but he did not list which organizations.
Do the Milwaukee Brewers need to add a pitcher like Reid Detmers?
Reid Detmers has intriguing upside, is controllable through the 2027 season, and is slated for his first year of arbitration this off-season, but given his 2024 season struggles he may not be able help the Brewers this year. Adding a veteran like Tyler Anderson would cost less from a trade capital standpoint (under control through the 2025 season with a $13 million salary) and he would likely benefit Milwaukee more this year.

Another thing to consider is that between pitchers like D.L. Hall, Joe Ross, and Devin Williams nearing a return to the big leagues, Jakob Junis and Jared Koenig already being activated, and the team acquiring Aaron Civale earlier in the month the Brewers may suddenly find themselves with a surplus of arms available.
Adding a dependable starter should still remain a priority but in wake of the Christian Yelich news the Brewers will be in the market for more offensive pieces as well.
