The Green Bay Packers have numerous decisions to make this offseason. One important choice is what to do at the wide receiver position. The Packers currently have only two receivers under contract for next season – Randall Cobb and Amari Rodgers – and Cobb is a likely cut candidate. Marquez Valdes-Scantling’s rookie contract just expired, but he’s been a productive receiver and one of the NFL’s best deep threats. Known for taking the top off of defenses, will MVS take the top off the Packers’ check book?
MVS Stats
Valdes-Scantling has been a productive receiver for the Packers who, for the most part, has stayed healthy. He’s avoided serious injury every season but has dealt with some smaller injuries. He’s also made continuous improvements over his rookie contract. MVS’ stats from the past three years are as follows:
2021: 26 receptions, 430 yards, 16.5 yards per catch, three touchdowns, zero drops
2020: 33 receptions, 690 yards, 20.9 yards per catch, six touchdowns, seven drops
2019: 26 receptions, 452 yards, 17.4 yards per catch, two touchdowns, two drops
As you can see, MVS has been a consistent deep threat who’s put up consistent numbers year after year. He’s played a main role in the Packers’ success throughout the past three seasons. To get a gauge on a potential MVS extension, we should look at other players who have put up similar stats.
Players Comparable to MVS
2021: 37 receptions, 473 yards, 12.8 yards per catch, three touchdowns, one drop
2020: 48 receptions, 896 yards, 18.7 yards per catch, eight touchdowns, nine drops
2021: 27 receptions, 394 yards, 14.6 yards per catch, one touchdown, four drops
2020: 37 receptions, 421 yards, 11.4 yards per catch, two touchdowns, three drops
2020: 30 receptions, 505 yards, 16.8 yards per catch, three touchdowns, three drops
2019: 36 receptions, 645 yards, 17.9 yards per catch, six touchdowns, one drop
As you can see, all three of these players have very similar stats. All three are known for big plays and having good speed. Agholor had the best season of these four wide receivers, so that should be the ceiling for an MVS contract extension.
Breshad Perriman has bounced around the league and at one point last year was on the streets. That’s why I didn’t include his 2021 season stats. He should be the floor for a Marquez Valdes-Scantling extension. The Packers would be smart to start contract discussions using these aforementioned three, or other players very similar stat/ability wise to MVS.
What A Contract Could Look Like For MVS
We stated before that an Agholor contract would be the ceiling for a Marquez Valdes-Scantling extension. Last offseason, Agholor signed a contract for two years and $22 million for the New England Patriots. Meanwhile, Perriman signed a contract for one year and $990,000 for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Those are the ceilings and the floors of an MVS contract extension. Most likely, an MVS contract sits closer to what Sammy Watkins signed for: one year and $5 million with the Baltimore Ravens.
Prediction for Contract
Based on all of this and the continual improvement of Marquez Valdes-Scantling, it’s my guess that he signs a contract for three years worth $22 million dollars. Very close to the Agholor contract, but with an additional year. It will be very interesting to see if the Packers decide to keep MVS on the roster at a price point like that with all the cap issues they have.
This is just one of the choices Green Bay will have to make regarding players they want to bring back. They certainly have an offseason full of tough decisions to be made.
