Today, I conclude my Wisconsin Football depth chart previews. Over the course of the last few weeks, I have previewed and predicted every position group’s two deep depth chart. The last position group is the safety position.
Going into this season, the safety spot is a strength of this roster. It’s a deep group, it’s a talented group, and it’s going to be a group heavily depended on if Wisconsin Football is going to be successful this year.
Wisconsin Football Safety Starters- Hunter Wohler and Kamo’i Latu
There is no debate on who the starters will be at safety. It will clearly be Hunter Wohler and Kamo’i Latu. These two are arguably two of the best overall players on this roster. They are fast, physical, and have a good nose for the football.
Hunter Wohler has been seen as player from fans and media as a potential break out player on this Wisconsin Football roster. I agree with that. After appearing in every game as a freshman in 2021, Wohler suffered in injury in the season opener last year and missed a good chunk of the 2022 season.
The stats won’t pop out as Wohler only recorded 21 tackles and one interception as a sophomore last season. However, don’t let that fool you. Wohler is a fantastic player and as long as he can stay healthy, he will be a force to be reckoned with in 2023.
Kamo’i Latu was a pickup in the transfer portal form Utah. He’s been a missing spark and a great addition to the position group and the team. Latu was a reserve in his first two seasons, but has seen plenty of action because of injuries to other players. Latu was fourth on the team last season in tackles with 56 and added two sacks and two interceptions.
Latu might also be the most physical player on this Wisconsin Football team. He has been the recipient of some hard hits in games and in practices. I think the duo of Latu and Wohler could be one of the best in the Big Ten this season.
Second Team- Travian Blaylock and Austin Brown
Travian Blaylock is a veteran on this team and is no slouch either. I believe he would be starting for a lot of Big Ten teams. He has dealt with some injuries in the past, but should see the field this year as long as he can stay healthy. He only recorded one tackle last year, but is effective when on the field.
Austin Brown is an intriguing player and one Wisconsin Football fans should see on the field this year. The former four star safety has been impressive in both spring and fall practices. He only recorded two tackles in 2022, but is a talented player. We should see a good number of reps from the redshirt freshman in 2023.
