Today, we conclude the offensive side of the ball in previewing the Wisconsin Badgers depth chart. After previewing quarterbacks, running backs, and wide receivers, we end with the offensive line. The offensive line is always one of the best units on this roster and 2023 will be no different. Most of last years players have stayed and some transfers have also entered in the picture as well. I believe there are at least eight or nine offensive linemen on this roster that would start at a lot of division one schools. I love the depth and talent of unit overall.
Starters- Jack Nelson, Joe Huber, Jake Renfro, Tanor Bortolini, Riley Mahlmann

I believe there are four locks on the offensive line. The only position I see a camp battle is left guard. Currently, that would be transfer Joe Huber and sixth year senior Michael Furtney. Jack Nelson, Tanor Bortolini, and Riley Mahlmann are returning starters from last season. After Joe Tippmann was selected by the New York Jets in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft, the center position is open but that will be taken by Cincinnati transfer Jake Renfro.
However, Renfro missed all of spring with a foot injury and is not ready to practice yet. As a result, it’s been Bortolini that has taken reps at center until Renfro is ready. Assuming he is ready by September 2, I’ll keep Renfro in at left guard. If not, Furtney will have no issues stepping in.

I thought there was a good chance Jack Nelson could declare for the draft last year. It’s a big win for Wisconsin that he returned for another season. I also thought Riley Mahlmann took a step forward last year and should take another step this season. I like the tackle duo the Badgers have.
Second Unit- Nolan Rucci, Michael Furtney, Joe Brunner, JP Benzschawel, Trey Wedig
There isn’t a true center with the second unit, but if any one of these could play center, I believe it would be Furtney. I also like this unit as there is a ton of talent. It might not be until next year, but I know Nolan Rucci is ready to make an impact. As one of the highest recruits to ever come to Wisconsin, he’s been patiently waiting behind Jack Nelson.
Joe Brunner and JP Benzschawel are two young players I am excited to see more of this season. Brunner is a physical guard and played really well when he received reps. Benzschawel is also a high recruit and we could see him play some meaningful snaps as well.
I have Trey Wedig slotted in as the backup right tackle. He did play some guard early in his career. However, I think his best position is tackle. Like Wedig, this second unit for Wisconsin is stacked and talented. I would not be surprised if this entire unit all got meaningful snaps throughout the year. It’s a good problem to have.
