For some reason, Milwaukee Bucks big man Bobby Portis got one vote for the NBA’s 2023-24 All-Defensive Team.
There’s no question about how important Portis is to the Bucks in terms of the scoring punch he brings off the bench — his Sixth Man of the Year nomination is a testament to this fact. However, even Portis himself will probably admit that his far from being an elite defender in the NBA.
Milwaukee Bucks News: Bobby Portis’ All-Defense Voted, Revealed
The identity of Portis’ single voter for the All-Defensive squad has surfaced. Apparently, he is Juan Ignacio Garcia-Ochoa, who is listed as the subdirector of the Spanish sports news outfit MARCA.
As pointed out by Milwaukee reporter Nathan Marzion of Behind the Bucks Pass, Garcia also had a number of other conspicuous votes for the NBA end-of-season awards:
NBA awards voter Ignacio Garcia (@jigochoa):
– Voted Sabonis and Edwards 1st team All-NBA over Giannis and Tatum
– Voted Sabonis 4th for MVP
– Voted Sabonis 3rd for DPOY
– Voted Bam 2nd Team All-NBA
– Voted Sabonis 1st Team All-Defense
– Voted Bobby Portis 2nd Team All-Defense— Nathan Marzion (@nathanmarzion) May 23, 2024
Apart from the Portis vote, Garcia also had Sacramento Kings All-Star center Domantas Sabonis on his All-Defense team. Garcia also voted for Sabonis in the MVP, Defensive Player of the Year, and All-NBA categories in pretty contentious fashion.
I guess it’s safe to say that this dude is a major Sabonis stan.
Despite Garcia’s all-too-obvious affinity toward Sabonis, it’s hard to deny that his Portis vote still sticks out the most. Unfortunately, these types of voters lead to serious questions about the qualifications of the media members who are asked to determine the winners of these individual awards.
