For the Wisconsin football staff, in-state cornerback Tre Poteat has been a priority target, but not an easy commitment.

Poteat, a three-star cornerback in the 2025 class, is a Verona native with deep ties to the Wisconsin football program. Poteat has been around the team and school since the start of his football career between skills camps, visits, and attending games. Wisconsin has put their best men forward as fellow Badgers commitments have been trying their best to lure Poteat.

During a recent official visit with the Wisconsin football staff and fellow Wisconsin football commitments, cornerback Tre Poteat received plenty of attention. Poteat has been tied to the Wisconsin football program for quite some time now, but remains uncommitted as he continues to pull in scholarship offers.

When Poteat arrived on campus, he was embraced by 2024 tight end commitment Robert Booker, a longtime friend and in-state rival. Booker posted to X a picture of the two with a caption stating that Poteat needs to ‘know where home is’ with a Badger emoji following the statement. Booker is not the only Badger looking to have Poteat join the program, as multiple other recruits commented and tagged Poteat in the same post.

Wisconsin Badgers Football Staff ‘Loves’ Poteat, But Might Lose the Recruiting Battle

The Wisconsin football staff has been thoroughly captivated by what Poteat can do on the field with both his size and speed. The cornerback also possesses excellent field vision and understands where he needs to put himself to make the correct play. Wisconsin has been so interested in Poteat, in fact, that they have position coach Paul Haynes leading the recruiting charge.

Haynes has showed an excellent amount of recruiting prowess this cycle as he has been the primary recruiter for three commitments thus far. Haynes is now in charge of the recruitment of Poteat, and hopes to land the recruit to cap off his secondary class.

However, Wisconsin may not have as much of a recruiting lead as they may hope, since Tennessee has been another major player for Poteat. Tennessee and Wisconsin have history during this recruiting cycle as the Volunteers lured away four-star edge rusher Jayden Loftin. Loftin was just recently on campus in Madison, but announced his commitment to Tennessee days later.

At this point in time, Iowa State seems to have backed off as Poteat did not book an official visit with the school. Poteat has an official visit with the Tennessee Volunteers coming up later this month which could prove to be pivotal in his collegiate decision. The cornerback has never been to Rocky Top before, which adds to the potential impact that his official visit could have.

The Wisconsin football staff already had Poteat on campus the first week of June for his official visit, which marks his fourth total recorded visit. For the Badgers staff, it is now a waiting game as Poteat is set upon completing his scheduled visit with Tennessee before making a decision.
