The Green Bay Packers are an iconic franchise that has been around almost as long as any franchise in the NFL. The consistency of the franchise does not only lie with the results of every season but also with the staff members who build that winning culture.
Players rarely stay with teams past one or two contracts, coaches even cycle quite in and out. Those aren’t the only key members of an organization though, equipment managers are faces that members of NFL teams that are integral to building the core of a successful organization. The Green Bay Packers were lucky to have one of the most personable and respected equipment managers in the NFL for over 40 years, but all good things must come to an end as Gordon “Red” Batty has retired from his services with the Green Bay Packers.

Gordon Batty began his career in the Canadian Football League at just 14 years old as an equipment assistant. Two Grey Cups (CFL championship) and two Super Bowls later, Batty hung up his reigns as the equipment manager for the Green Bay Packers.
Many Green Bay Packers Fans could recognize him as a sideline fixture for the Packers, or from different events that his name has arisen. Most notably with former Green Bay Packer running back Aaron Jones when his father passed, Batty helped come up with an idea to sew a pocket into his jersey to keep his ashes.

The Pack’s equipment manager for the last 30 years, Gordon Batty is retiring. “Red” is a master at his craft, deeply appeciated by the players, the best Lambeau “insider” tour guide ever, my favorite hockey conversationalist, a treasure.

Red was my very first NFL “equipment guy” and he took great care of us all. What a gem. Years later he helped my wife get me my Oilers jersey as a Christmas gift. By then he was with the Packers and the Oilers were the Titans. He never forgot me and I was always touched by…

He will likely find himself in the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame and will not be forgotten by the Green Bay Packers organization or fanbase anytime soon.
