The Green Bay Packers entered the offseason feeling good about the direction of the franchise. They needed to make changes in their defensive leadership, and they did so by firing Joe Barry and hiring Jeff Hafley. Green Bay also upgraded their roster by signing free agent running back Josh Jacobs and safety Xavier McKinney. These two players, along with their 11 new rookies from the 2024 NFL Draft, are expected to make the roster even more dynamic.
Indeed, the vibes surrounding the team are much more confident than they were a year ago. At this time last offseason, the Packers were going into their first season with Jordan Love as their starting quarterback after trading Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets. While many fans expressed confidence in the young starter, there were many more (it seems) that doubted him.
And while the 2023 NFL season got off to a rough start in Green Bay, Love and his young playmakers rallied to win seven of their final ten games, made the playoffs, and upset the Dallas Cowboys in the Wild Card round.
Now the biggest questions surround the team are when is Love getting his contract extension and how much will he be paid?
Green Bay Packers Quarterback Jordan Love Is at OTA’s Without a Contract Extension
Earlier this week, it was reported that the Packers have just one player missing from OTA’s, which are voluntary workouts. Love, of course, is among the players there, and head coach Matt LaFleur praised him for this example and leadership in being present.
While Love and the Packers are excited to prepare for playing the 2024 season, the business side of football never stops. The former 2020 first round pick is entering his fifth year in the NFL and is eligible for a contract extension. He is scheduled to make a little over $13 million, which is not a lot of money when compared to the salaries of other NFL quarterbacks.
Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff, for example, just signed a four-year $212 million extension. Daniel Jones of the New York Giants is even making $40 million a season.
When asked if he would play the 2024 season under his current deal without an extension, Love responded, “I don’t know. We’ll see.”
NFL Insider Has No Concerns that the Green Bay Packers Will Pay Jordan Love
Yesterday on NFL Network, insider Ian Rapoport had this to say about Love’s contract status:
“I don’t want to say the reason they don’t have a deal yet, but the reason that we start looking at June or July or August for this deal instead of this last spring is because they couldn’t really revise that old deal until May 8.
“You talk about his contract starting with a ‘5.’ I would echo that. You know, there were for sure questions before [last] season. I don’t think there are any questions now. From my understanding, it’s not a matter of if Jordan Love becomes one of the highest paid quarterbacks in the NFL, it’s when will Jordan Love become one of the highest paid quarterbacks in the NFL.”
Based on this, fans can be assured that Love will get a contract signed before the season starts, and very likely before training camp in late July.
Also, the number is going to be massive. There are only five quarterbacks in the NFL right now that are making $50 million or more in a season, and Love is expected to join that list.
