The Wisconsin Women’s basketball team will open their Big Ten Conference Tournament tomorrow against the Penn State Lady Lions.
This season, the Wisconsin Women’s basketball team has endured their fair share of ups and downs, but hopes to make an impact during the conference tournament. Wisconsin has had a tough time playing against their conference this season, but will face a familiar foe who they beat earlier this year. The Badgers are hoping to contend for the automatic qualifier for the NCAA Tournament.
Wisconsin Women’s Basketball Putting Final Preparations On Before Penn State Clash
In the first round of the Big Ten Conference Tournament, the Wisconsin Women’s basketball team will square off against the Penn State Lady Lions. Penn State holds an 18-11 record this season with a conference record of 9-9 as they enter the match-up as the higher-ranked seed. The Lady Lions lost to the Badgers earlier this year, 69-64, in the midst of a six-game skid for the team.
The Lady Lions have recorded big wins this season over Nebraska and Kansas, while also nearly upsetting the #8 USC Trojans. As of late, Penn State has scuffled and struggled to play their best basketball as they dropped games to Michigan, Illinois, and Maryland.
Key#1: Wisconsin Basketball Must Control Boards to Defeat the Lady Lions
In the first match-up against the Nittany Lions earlier this season, the Wisconsin Women’s basketball team walked away with the 69-64 win. Forward Serah Williams was the heart and soul of the Badgers as she recorded 31-points, 15 rebounds, four steals, and four blocks. Williams carried the Badgers this first time around, but the team did a great job forcing bad shots and rebounding against the Lady Lions.
Senior guard Halle Douglass recorded six rebounds against the Lady Lions earlier this season and snagged away second-chance points. If Wisconsin basketball can control the boards and limit the second-chance points for the Lady Lions, it should be a Badgers victory once again.
Key #2: Wisconsin Basketball Must Stop Guard Shay Ciezki At All Costs
One of the under-the-radar players for the Penn State Women’s basketball team has been Sophomore guard Shay Ciezki. Ciezki is a lethal long-range shooter and she has the ability to greatly impact the game against the Wisconsin basketball team. Last time out against the Badgers, Ciezki dropped 18 points and five three-point shots as she battled to bring the Nittany Lions within striking range.
The talented guard has had games this season with 8,7, and 5 three-pointers made, which has turned her into a shooter opposing defenses do not want to leave open. Wisconsin basketball will need to stop Ciezki from creating space for deep shots, otherwise the game could get out of control.
