Wisconsin hockey runs the world right now. The Badgers are the only college program with both men’s and women’s hockey teams ranked in the top five in the country. UW men’s hockey coach Mike Hastings has his team back in the national picture shortly into his first season, much to the excitement of Badger hockey fans. Meanwhile, longtime women’s hockey coach Mark Johnson is rocking and rolling with the top-ranked team as usual.
Wisconsin Badgers Hockey Captain Britta Curl Wins National Player of the Month for September/October
On Wednesday, the Hockey Commissioners Association announced its monthly honors winners for the opening month of the college hockey season. Wisconsin women’s hockey captain Britta Curl was named the women’s player of the month.
Curl’s honors come after posting an impressive 26 points in the Badgers’ first ten games of the season. The forward’s 2.6 points per game led the country in that stretch. Although she did not score in the season opener, the graduate student has scored in every game since and currently holds a nine-game scoring streak that is tied for the program record.
The Bismarck, North Dakota native currently leads her Wisconsin hockey team in points, assists, plus/minus, and blocked shots.
Wisconsin Hockey and Its Dominating Start to Its Season
After winning the national championship last season, Wisconsin hockey has not slowed down at all. Johnson has his squad atop the national rankings with a 10-0 start. The Badgers have only played in two games decided by two goals or fewer.
Among the biggest questions coming into this season for Wisconsin hockey was its starting goaltender. Last year’s starter, Cami Kronish, exhausted her eligibility at the end of last season, and Jane Gervais saw limited playing time.
Despite the lack of proven experience, it appears the Badgers have nothing to fear. Redshirt junior Gervais has gotten five starts and posted three shutouts thus far. True freshman Ava McNaughton, meanwhile, has showcased her abilities to be the future starter for the seven-time national championship-winning program. The six-foot Pennsylvania native has gotten the nod in five starts herself and posted two shutouts of her own.
