The Wisconsin basketball team has defeated the Southern Methodist University Mustangs, 69-61, to win the Tip-Off tournament trophy.
Wisconsin is officially the winners of the 2023 Fort Myers Tip-Off Classic after defeating SMU in what was an entertaining, back-and-forth game. The Badgers were able to pull off the victory behind clutch shooting from guard Chucky Hepburn late in the game. Freshman John Blackwell had another great performance with ten points off of the bench.
Wisconsin Basketball Wins 2023 Fort Myers Tip-Off Tournament Following Wins Over Virginia, SMU
After two early concerning losses the Wisconsin basketball team is back in form and winning games once again. The season is still extremely early, but the Badgers have shown flashes of what can be a truly special team if everything works cohesively.
In their game against Virginia, Wisconsin was able to hold a strong, ranked team to a season-low in points. The Badgers forced the Cavaliers to take bad shots and made the open looks that they were given. Wisconsin basketball shot the lights out from long range as they took down a team that could have done the same against the Badgers.
Wisconsin, on the other hand, was not able to continue their hot shooting performance from deep against the Mustangs. The Badgers started the game hitting one of their first 19 shots from three-point range and finished the game shooting 20.8%. Wisconsin did however perform better when they were driving to the rim and avoiding taking the first open jump shot opportunity they received.
The Wisconsin Badgers basketball team started off slow on defense against the Mustangs as they allowed far too many open looks and easy lanes to the basket. As the game progressed however, the Badgers began to accumulate steals and stops as they finished the game with 11 steals.
A Look Ahead: Wisconsin Badgers Basketball Faces Western Illinois
Wisconsin basketball was able to hang onto a win against the Mustangs behind some great play from specific players. While it is a team game, guard Chucky Hepburn came up clutch for the team late in the game hitting crucial shots for the team. Steven Crowl was also crucial on the board for Wisconsin basketball as usual, but the big man was subject to plenty of contact in the game.
The next game on the schedule for the Wisconsin basketball team is the Western Illinois Leathernecks. Wisconsin should be able to run through their opponent before entering the gauntlet of their schedule as they face #4 Marquette, #21 Michigan State, and #3 Arizona next.
