The Wisconsin Badgers football team has struggled thus far during the 2023 season to find their identity. However, after their most recent loss, Head Coach Luke Fickell argues the team has grown closer.
So far this season, the Wisconsin Badgers have struggled to find their rhythm offensively. Along with this, the Badgers have also struggled to play consistently this season against solid competition. Following their recent loss, Wisconsin football Head Coach Luke Fickell addressed the media to give a handful of updates.
Wisconsin Badgers Football Underestimated Year One Challenges Following Staff Changes
Coach Luke Fickell sat down with the media on Monday, October 16th, two days after an embarrassing 15-6 loss to the Iowa Hawkeyes. Fickell first spoke about the major injury to starting quarterback Tanner Mordecai, which caused the starter to miss the majority of the game against Iowa.
Fickell confirmed that Mordecai had broken his hand and needed surgery to repair the injury. The Head Coach also confirmed that the Badgers will be without their starting quarterback for the remainder of the year. When asked about the injury, Fickell stated, “…this has been a tough one, but we knew we had to move past.”
Losing your starting quarterback when the program needs him the most is certainly not ideal. However, Fickell seemed confident in his staff and his players following the injury loss and the loss to the Hawkeyes.
Can the Wisconsin Badgers Rally After a Crucial Injury Loss?
Coach Fickell was asked one question in particular that seemed to sum up his overall theme during his media availability. Fickell stated after the week one game against Buffalo that if the Badgers continued to play below expectations, 2023 would be “…a long, tough season.”
Now, following the loss to Iowa, the Wisconsin Badgers sit in the same position they were in following the Buffalo game. Wisconsin still has plenty they need to work on, which now must occur without their starting quarterback and captain.
One reporter asked Coach Fickell if he felt his comments following the Buffalo game still stood strong heading into week eight. Fickell responded by comparing the differences between then and now with the team, stating, “I think we have a better understanding of ourselves and what we can do offensively and defensively.”
Wisconsin has some of the toughest tests of the season still waiting for them. The Badgers will host the third-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes on October 28th after their week eight challenge against the Illinois Fighting Illini. Wisconsin will finish off the season against Minnesota, who have beaten the Badgers three years in a row.
While the hope and morale surrounding the Wisconsin Badgers is at a low point, the team seems to have learned their identity internally. Hopefully, Coach Fickell can right the wrongs before the team loses control of their season.
