The Wisconsin Badgers rival, the Michigan State Spartans, have a head coach job opening, and there were rumors floating around that Urban Meyer was going to interview for the job, but he shut them down real fast. According to the Athletic’s Bruce Feldman, Meyer said he has been enjoying his job so much as a Fox Sports analyst that he has “no interest” in joining the Spartans, and there is “zero truth” to these rumors.
Mel Tucker was fired as the Michigan State Spartans head coach last week, and Michigan State will be looking for its next head coach. The Wisconsin Badgers rival is going to want to take their time with the next head coach search. Michigan State is in the same Big 10 division as Michigan, Maryland, Penn State, and Ohio State.
Urban Meyer would have been an interesting name for the Michigan State Spartans, considering the fact that he has an interesting coaching history. He is 59 years old and understands the recruiting business in the BIG 10 Conference.
He coached the Florida Gators in the SEC from 2005-2010 and won two National Championship with that program. Meyer was also the head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes from 2012-2018. He won one National Title with the Buckeyes.
He also took a chance as an NFL head coach in 2021 with the Jacksonville Jaguars, but Meyer was fired before the season was over during his first year in the NFL.
Wisconsin Badgers Rival, the Michigan State Spartans AD Speaks on What He Wants Even if He Doesn’t Land Urban Meyer
Michigan State’s athletic director, Alan Haller, recently wrote a letter to the university community addressing the coaching search by saying as follows:
“Regarding the search, we will throughly evaluate and do everything required to find the right individual to lead the Spartan football program. Throughout the process, I won’t be able to provide many updates. I realize that our community has a tremendous passion for Spartan football and that there’s a great desire for more information about this process. However, privacy is important to attract top-caliber candidates, most of whom are involved in their own current seasons. I expect that you will hear a lot more names and rumors. I expect to speak with my individuals throughout this process. While some are candidates, others will be resources for me as I go about my due diligence to ensure the best hire for Michigan State.”
There will probably be Urban Meyer rumors going around anyway, even if he denies it. He is a hot name because of history. Also, there will be many more names that will come out for the Wisconsin Badgers rival job later on.
