Why the Packers Need to Sign Jarvis Landry Post Draft

The Green Bay Packers added three wide receivers in the 2022 NFL Draft.  Christian Watson out of NDSU in the second round, Romeo Doubs out of Nevada in the fourth round, and Samouri Toure out of Nebraska in the seventh round.  However Green Bay could still use a veteran number one wide receiver on the roster for week one.  Jarvis Landry is exactly that type of player.

While Christian Watson figures to be the rookie that makes the biggest impact in 2022 (not guaranteed), he is a big bodied WR that can line up on the outside.  His ability to make plays across the middle of the field may take time to develop.

Jarvis Landry may be on his way out of Cleveland.

    Why Jarvis Landry?

Jarvis Landry is a eight-year NFL veteran with three 1,000 yard seasons under his belt. From 2015-2019, Landry made the Pro Bowl five times and led the NFL with 112 receptions in 2017. Playing with the Miami Dolphins and Cleveland Browns, however, have not provided him with the best quarterback play.

If Landry were to land with the Packers, he would immediately be the team’s best wide receiver. With Landry the Packers would have the kind of option that they have been missing since Jordy Nelson was with the team (and healthy). Down field, across the middle, inside, outside, Landry can line up anywhere and be effective.  Allen Lazard has shown flashes of being a quality number one/two option, but consistency has limited his effectiveness. Lazard’s downfield blocking however, makes him an invaluable member of the team, but does not make him a clear-cut second option in the passing game.

    What would Landry Cost?

According to Spotrac, Jarvis Landry was due $14.3 million in 2022 with a $16.4 million cap hit. That was before the Browns released him.  The Browns only have a dead cap hit of $1.5 million after releasing him, so Landry will be looking for a minimum of that 14-16 million dollar range.  This would be tight given the Packers’ salary cap situation, but not impossible.
