Unlike his head coach Kyle Shanahan, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy didn’t go as far as to saying that he knew they will be playing the Green Bay Packers in the divisional round as early as the second quarter of the Wild Card round. He gave a bit more respect to the Dallas Cowboys.
When talking to reporters on Wednesday, Purdy was asked the moment he knew that it’s the Packers, and not the Cowboys, who would be advancing to the next round of the NFL Playoffs. Entering the said contest, Mike McCarthy’s men were the heavy favorites, but Jordan Love and Co. dominated from start to finish en route to the 48-32 victory.
Purdy responded that he still had some doubts on who would win, especially when it looked like the Cowboys were coming back to life late in the fourth quarter. Nonetheless, he did admit he kind of had a feeling that the Packers would win when the Packers went up 41-16 in the third quarter.
“You never know. At the end, the Cowboys were making a push and so you never really know. But, after they got up and then the third quarter they were up pretty big, I was like, ‘okay, I think this is going to probably be the team.’ But like I said, you never know,” Purdy shared, via 49ers WebZone.
“The Cowboys started to come back and then it was like, alright. So you’re just watching and then obviously the minute the clock hits zero, it’s like, ‘alright, let’s go. It’s going to be the Packers.’ It was a great game to watch and they came out ready to play against the Cowboys. They played really well. So yeah, I guess third quarter I started thinking we were going to play the Packers.”
While it’s nice that Brock Purdy gave some respect on the Dallas Cowboys, it’s worth noting that they never really had a chance against the Green Bay Packers. Their late run in the Wild Card was nothing more than just garbage-time attempt to lessen the gap.
There was no way the Packers would allow themselves to collapse in the fourth quarter when they were able to shut down the Cowboys offense through the first three quarters.
San Francisco 49ers Coach Kyle Shanahan’s Savage Take on Green Bay Packers Win
As mentioned, Kyle Shanahan was more blunt in his assessment of the Green Bay Packers-Dallas Cowboys game. When asked the same question last Tuesday, the San Francisco 49ers coach said he knew the Packers are in after going up 27-0 midway through the second quarter.
“We started really focusing on them halfway during the second quarter [vs. the Cowboys],” Shanahan said on preparing for the Packers.
Regardless of the difference in takes between Kyle Shanahan and Brock Purdy, one thing is certain: they are more than aware of the threat that Green Bay brings.
