Tre’Vius Hodges-Tomlinson Scouting Report
Per NFL Draft Buzz, Hodges-Tomlinson has the following strengths and weaknesses:
Strengths
- Changes direction with ease. Can play any spot in the secondary
- Has good top-end speed and length to make plays on the ball
- Anticipation skills could make him a star in zone-based schemes
Weaknesses
- Making tackles against bigger backs is a potential issue
- Tends to get grabby downfield on receivers
- Sloppy footwork at times
Cornerback is one of the deepest positions in the 2023 NFL draft. This means that good corners will be available in the mid-rounds of the draft. Hodges-Tomlinson has the potential to be a steal for a team in the mid-rounds. His size is not ideal but with more receivers having a smaller profile, he can still hold his own. His run defense is a potential problem but a team with a dominant front seven could mask those issues. He could also find a role more as a slot corner where his stature is more suitable.
Tre’Vius Hodges-Tomlinson in Mock Drafts
Hodges-Tomlinson is projected as a fourth-round pick according to NFL Mock Draft Database. In a deep cornerback class, he is ranked somewhere between 15-20 on most sites. His senior year stats and exposure in the College Football Playoff could lead to his draft stock rising as April rolls around. Below is a list of different mock drafts and where they have Hodges-Tomlinson being taken in the NFL Draft.
- TWSN – First round: Bengals
- Phin Phanatic – Third round: Dolphins
- NFL Mocks – Fourth round: Panthers
Would Tre’Vius Hodges-Tomlinson Fit on the Packers?
It seems unlikely that the Packers would give Hodges-Tomlinson a look. Outside of the safety position, the Packers do not have much need in the secondary. Jaire Alexander, Eric Stokes, and Rasul Douglas seem to have a firm grasp on the top three spots in the secondary. All of those players are under multi-year contracts and playing well enough that the Packers are not looking to move on. He could provide some depth at the position but it would have to be the right value.
I think it all depends on where he falls in the draft. I do not see the Packers spending a day 1 or 2 pick on him. There are simply too many other areas of need on the roster to worry about cornerback depth. However, if he slides to day 3, GM Brian Gutekunst might see it as too good of a value. Given how much exposure Hodges-Tomlinson is getting I find it unlikely he slides that far. However, anything can happen on draft day.
