The Milwaukee Brewers had probably one of the worst weekends in quite some time across the MLB. Milwaukee was swept at home against the Oakland Athletics. Oakland has won five consecutive games, but they have by far the worst record in the MLB this season at 17-50.
With their pathetic performance this weekend, the Pittsburgh Pirates are back in first place in the NL Central for the moment after taking two of three from the reeling New York Mets. The Mets have been one of the biggest disappointments in all of baseball this season They have a 31-35 record so far this season and the Pirates took advantage of playing a bad baseball team, meanwhile the Milwaukee Brewers didn’t.
Pirates Back Atop the NL Central After A’s Sweep Brewers
The Pirates have a 34-30 record and Miwaukee has a 34-32 record so far this season across the MLB. The good is that the Brewers are just one game back. However, if they were able to handle business this past weekend, they would still be leading the NL Central.
The Milwaukee Brewers are currently the sixth seed in the NL entering Monday and right behind them in the NL Wild Card Standings are the San Francisco Giants, who are currently 33-32 on the year. This could be the defining series that causes the Brewers to be on the outside looking in once again for the second consecutive season.
The Pittsburgh Pirates did start the season 20-8 and hit an extremely rough patch, but they have found their groove back as of late. There is still plenty of time for the Milwaukee Brewers to turn it around. What will happen if they miss the playoffs for the second straight season? Will there be firings or will they stay the course?
There is enough talent on this roster to make the playoffs, but the pitching has been one of the major disappointments this year. Milwaukee did trade away Josh Hader at the MLB trade deadline last season. Would they be dealing a Corbin Burnes, Brandon Woodruff, or a Freddy Peralta to another contender with a higher payroll? It remains to be seen.
However, this was supposed to be a year that the Pittsburgh Pirates were going to be bad once again and be in the bottom of the NL Central Standings. It appears as if Pittsburgh has arrived and the Milwaukee Brewers need to wake up and be better. They will both be facing each other this weekend. A preview on that series will be coming later this week.
