After two intense days of practice to start Packers training camp, Matt LaFleur eased up on the throttle, conducting a shorter, half-speed practice.
Here’s everything you need to know from day three.
Packers Training Camp Day 3 Recap: RT Competition Continues
Attendance/injuries:
David Bakhtiari was back at practice after a rest day on Thursday, and Jaire Alexander was also good to go after appearing to suffer an injury at the end of day two. LaFleur said there was “no concern” for Alexander.
One player not at Packers practice was Jonathan Garvin. The edge rusher was released earlier in the day (on his birthday, no less) after three years with the Packers.
A former seventh-round pick, Garvin found himself at the bottom of the depth chart and lining up with the defensive linemen to start training camp, a last resort to find a role on the Packers.
Depth chart:
Yosh Nijman was with the ones at right tackle, which is notable after Zach Tom got the start during the first two practices, although Nijman started at left tackle on day two while Bakhtiari rested.
LaFleur indicated the battle for the Packers starting right tackle position is very much open, and at this point, it appears neither Nijman nor Tom has a leg up on the other. Nijman also spelled Bakhtiari at left tackle with the first team on Friday.
At the start of the team walkthrough period, the starters were as follows:
Offense: Jordan Love, Aaron Jones, Luke Musgrave, Josiah Deguara, Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, David Bakhtiari, Elgton Jenkins, Josh Myers, Jon Runyan, Yosh Nijman.
Defense: Devonte Wyatt, Kenny Clark, T.J. Slaton, Justin Hollins, De’Vondre Campbell, Quay Walker, Preston Smith, Jaire Alexander, Rasul Douglas, Rudy Ford, Darnell Savage.
Due to the walkthrough pace of practice, the roster was split into two larger groups, giving more players the opportunity to run with the ones.
The following Packers players also worked with the first team throughout the day:
A.J. Dillon, Lew Nichols III, Patrick Taylor, Malik Heath, Jayden Reed, Samori Toure, Tyler Davis, Zach Tom, Royce Newman, Colby Wooden, Kingsley Enagbare, Lukas Van Ness, Tariq Carpenter, Isaiah McDuffie, Eric Wilson, Corey Ballentine, Shemar Jean-Charles, Keisean Nixon, Dallin Leavitt, Tarvarius Moore.
Special teams insight:
Some indicators of which players will likely be involved on the Packers special teams emerged on Friday.
Massive offensive tackles Caleb Jones, and Kadeem Telfort lined up on the left side of the field goal protection team. The pair weigh almost 700lbs combined, standing at 6’9” and 6’7”, respectively.
During the punt session, incumbent starter Pat O’Donnell received all the reps ahead of rookie Daniel Whelan, averaging 49.4 yards and 4.1 seconds of hang time on eight punts swinging away.
When punting Aussie style, O’Donnell landed five of six inside the 10, with one landing right at the 10, for an average hang time of 4.21 seconds.
Last year’s first-team All-Pro returner Keisean Nixon alternated with rookie Jayden Reed in fielding the punts, with Samori Toure also catching a couple.
Innis Gaines and Rudy Ford appear to be the starting jammers/flyers at the moment, while several players practiced as gunners, including Ballentine, Douglas, Rudy Ford, Tyrell Ford, Gaines, Heath, Jean-Charles, Moore, Benny Sapp, Kiondre Thomas, Toure, Carrington Valentine, Deuce Watts.
