Green Bay finds themselves with 11 draft picks currently in the 2022 NFL draft. Their two first round picks are just the third multi-pick first round since 2009 for the Packers. In the previous two they drafted B.J. Raji, Clay Matthews (2009), Rashan Gary, and Darnell Savage (2019). However Green Bay may only draft one player in the first round if the right trade presents itself. Here are 3 scenarios we see as possibilities:
1. Trade up to #13 via Houston Texans:
Proposed Trade:
- GB receives: Pick #13
- HOU receives: Picks #22, and #53
Why the trade would make sense for the Texans:
The Texans are no where near contention after after trading Watson. Houston has already obtained a boatload of picks from that trade, so why not grab a few more? Their rebuild is in full bloom and more chances to pick in the first two rounds, the better.
Why the trade would make sense for the Packers:
Green Bay could jump at least 4 picks between 22 and 13 that are almost certainly going to take a few wide receivers:
- 15) Philadelphia Eagles (from Miami Dolphins)
- 16) Philadelphia Eagles (from Indianapolis Colts)
- 19) Philadelphia Eagles
- 20) Pittsburgh Steelers
Philadelphia and Pittsburgh both find themselves in the market for a wide receiver, and with Philadelphia drafting THREE times in that span Green Bay may feel inclined to move up. Especially if they see a wide receiver or two go in the first 12 picks.
2. Trade up to #7 via New York Giants:
Proposed Trade:
- GB receives: Pick #7
- NYG receives: Picks #22, #28, #92
Why the trade would make sense for the Giants:
The New York Giants have picks #5 and #7 in the first round this year. If they get “their guy” with the 5th overall pick, they may feel inclined to stock pile more picks by trading the 7th overall pick.
Why the trade would make sense for the Packers:
If Green Bay sees a wide receiver or offensive lineman they can’t live without and want to jump, this is the draft to do it. This would be the highest they picked in an NFL draft since they took A.J. Hawk in the mid 2000s. With this pick you are able to start looking at OL Evan Neal, OL Ikem Ekwonu, OL Charles Cross, or literally any wide receiver in this draft. A real chance at getting a center piece for your offense.
3. Trade up to #19 via Philadelphia Eagles:
Proposed Trade:
- GB receives: Pick #19
- PHI receives: Picks #22, #132
Why the trade would make sense for the Eagles:
As mentioned earlier the Eagles have 3 first round picks in this year’s draft. Trading their 1 9th overall pick would be their lowest pick of the round. If they were able to stock pile one more 4th rounder just to move back 3 spots for their final pick of the round, why not?
Why the trade would make sense for the Packers:
Green Bay would have to do this to realistically jump one team, the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers go into this years’ draft with as much of a need at the wide receiver position as Green Bay. If the Eagles are sitting at pick 19 and Brian Gutekunst only sees one more first round wide receiver on the board, I’d expect him to make that jump. Giving up one 4th round pick is worth getting the wide receiver you want.
