NFL: The Green Bay Packers will be going into a 2023 season with more questions than answers at this point. The franchise-altering Aaron Rodgers trade set forth a new era in Green Bay. Jordan Love will be the first quarterback not named Brett Favre or Aaron Rodgers to start week one for the Packers in 31 years. That coupled with numerous veterans leaving in free agency have all of a sudden made the Green Bay Packers one of the youngest teams in the NFL. Some veteran leadership at key positions could do wonders for this team.
Veteran CB Casey Hayward A Potential Fit For The Green Bay Packers (NFL)
Casey Hayward was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft. He spent four seasons in Green Bay and played in 51 games, starting 20 of them. He recorded nine interceptions, 34 passes defended and a touchdown as a Packer. He was not re-signed by the team in free agency and signed with the Los Angeles Chargers.
Casey Hayward spent five years as a Charger and established himself as one of the best corners in the league. He was a Second Team All-Pro twice and was selected for two Pro Bowls. In 75 starts for the Chargers, he recorded 14 interceptions, 66 passes defended and a touchdown. He would spend a year with the Las Vegas Raiders, starting every game, and a year with the Falcons, where he only appeared in 6 games. Hayward, 33, is currently a free agent.
How Would Casey Hayward Fit In With The Current Green Bay Packers Secondary?
Michael Johrendt published an article that highlighted just that:
It has been eight seasons since the Packers had cornerback Casey Hayward on their roster, and it still is one of the biggest the front office has made in a long time by letting him walk. Hayward went on to big-time success with the Chargers, after which he played for the Raiders and the Falcons for one season each.
If Douglas ends up making the move to safety alongside Darnell Savage, then it would be good to have a veteran CB working the slot. Plus, being able to add a mentor for both Jaire Alexander and Eric Stokes would be the cherry on top of this already-strong defensive unit.
