The Green Bay Packers starting safety situation was murky heading into training camp after the team lost Adrian Amos to the New York Jets in free agency. Head coach Matt LaFleur offered more clarity as to the Packers’ long-term plans this season for the starting safety that will line up alongside Darnell Savage.
Spoiler: It’s not much clearer than the last week in July.
The Packers have a few options to choose from. Rudy Ford has experience with the Packers’ defense. Former Houston Texans safety Jonathan Owens was signed in free agency.
The Packers drafted Anthony Johnson Jr. in the seventh round. He’s had a solid start to the Packers preseason. Cornerback Rasul Douglas also wants to throw his hat in the race to be a starting safety.
The Green Bay Packers’ plan at safety revealed
On Wednesday, LaFleur revealed one key piece to his staff’s plans for safety while bypassing the starter for Week 1. According to Matt Schneidman with The Athletic, LaFleur said the coaching staff has a clear frontrunner to be the starter against the Chicago Bears. However, LaFleur said the starting role would be subject to change throughout the season.
LaFleur says he has a pretty good idea who will start at safety alongside Darnell Savage in Week 1, but that it could remain a fluid situation throughout the season.

That’s a surprising comment by LaFleur. One would hope someone on the defense would take the position outright in training camp this summer. But the Packers don’t seem to be sold on one particular safety as a starter this season.
The question as to who their second starting safety is will be a continual question throughout the season. The Packers will hope the instability in the secondary doesn’t cause opposing offenses to find a leaky (fluid) defense.
