Vince Lombardi was once quoted as saying: “There are three things that are important to every man in this locker room. His God, his family, and the Green Bay Packers. In that order.” Over the course of the franchise’s history, that has been more true for some players than others. It is easy to tell by the way a player interacts with his teammates and community who really Carries the G. One of those players on the current Packers roster is Rashan Gary, whose reaction to his torn ACL last season indicates that he is living up to the Lombardi Code.
All Rashan Gary Could Think About Was Letting Down the Green Bay Packers
Gary has been present at the Packers’ voluntary offseason programs, but has not practiced. Instead, he has been rehabbing his injured knee on the sideline. For him, though, it is all about being around his teammates. When he addressed the media following mandatory mini camp practice on Tuesday, Gary revealed it was those teammates that he thought about when he went down last season:
“Like, once I got hurt, my focus, it really wasn’t on me, it wasn’t about what I was doing, it was really on this team. We had young guys, JJ [Kingsley Enagbare], he was able to get some experience, but that’s what I was thinking about, man. I wasn’t thinking about what I was going through.
“I was really just thinking about just letting down this team, bro, you feel me? I love these guys, love the organization, love the opportunity [and] chances that they gave me. But when I get here, I wasn’t thinking about me. I was thinking about how to help this team from where I can and what I can do.”
It is rare to find teammates that are that dedicated to the rest of team. Prior to his injury, there were rumors that Gary would be in line for a $100 million contract extension. After the injury? It appears the Packers want to see how he will play before committing a large amount of money to him. Instead of focusing on how the injury may have negatively affected his huge payday, Gary’s focus was on his team. Even though he could not be out on the field, he wanted to find ways to contribute and help the team win.
Get this man a captain’s patch (but don’t tell Za”Darius Smith).
