Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst said after April’s draft that the door was open to re-signing Adrian Amos. That statement is hard to believe after Amos’ contract details surfaced Monday.
Amos, who served as a Packers team captain last season, signed with the New York Jets in June after four years in Gren Bay. Amos visited with multiple teams before signing with the Jets–who now have several Packers players from the 2022 squad. Amos took a substantial pay decrease from his last base salary to team up with Aaron Rodgers in New York.
The Green Bay Packers could have had Adrian Amos cheap
According to Aaron Wilson with KPRC, Amos is set to make $1.25 million in guaranteed money. Amos has the opportunity to get a few million more with bonuses.
#Jets deal for Adrian Amos has base salary of $1.25 million guaranteed, $500,000 signing bonus paid June 30, plus incentives: 60% PT $225K bonus, 70% PT $450K bonus, 80% PT $675K bonus, 90% PT $900K bonus, noncumulative, $500K Pro Bowl bonus, plus playoff incentive up to $850K

If #Jets make playoffs, Adrian Amos due $200K bonus. If #Jets win divisional round playoff and he plays 80% or more in game, $275K; if #Jets win conference championship game and he plays 80% or more $375K. Max of postseason pay incentive $850K

That’s a pretty good deal for the Jets. The Packers previously paid Amos $9 million annually for his average base salary.
The Packers signed a cheaper safety
The Packers signed safety Jonathan Owens this offseason as a potential Amos replacement. Owens is playing for the Packers on a $1.01 million contract. The difference in guaranteed salary isn’t much between Owens and Amos.
Packers fans who wanted Amos back will likely be upset by his contract with the Jets. Owens is cheaper, but defensive coordinator Joe Barry has said he’s unsure if Owens will be a starter this season. Our Lads listed Rudy Ford as the Packers projected starter at safety alongside Darnell Savage.
The Packers had the cap space to re-sign Amos. According to Over The Cap, the Packers still have over $16 million left in free agency. It doesn’t make sense that the Packers wouldn’t try to bring back their team captain for a fraction of what he was being paid last season unless they wanted to move on.
Judging from the sentiments I’ve read from Packers fans this offseason, most fans in Green Bay didn’t want to lose him this offseason.
