NFL: The Green Bay Packers are going to have a completely new offense heading into 2023. The massive amount of player turnover has ushered in a new era for the Packers. Many are excited to see what the young and explosive offense can do with Jordan Love at quarterback. One position that the Packers will be looking to solidify throughout the year will be the slot wide receiver. As we approach the pre-season, the Packers think they have already found their guy.
The Green Bay Packers Believe Jayden Reed Is Their Answer In The Slot
Jayden Reed was taken in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft with pick number 50. Such a high pick (for the Packers) on a wide receiver means they expect immediate impact on the offense. Peter King from NBC Sports highlighted exactly how the Packers intend to do that:
There was not a lot fanfare coming out of Michigan State for Jayden Reed. Smaller wide receiver, 5’9″ maybe 5’10”, the Packers picked him in the second round and he has come in and he hasn’t been the best wide receiver in training camp, but the Packers wanted a wide receiver to compliment Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs.
They basically have found a guy who they feel can go into the slot for them and can make a living playing a little bit of ping pong in the middle of the field. I think what you’re going to see with Jayden Reed early on, he may take lumps, teams will try to be physical with him. He’s not a big guy, but they are counting on Reed to be a good intermediate target with the other two wide receivers (Watson and Doubs) on the outside.
So as I look at it Jayden Reed is going to have a good chance to be an impact player early on with the 2023 Green Bay Packers.
What Type Of Receiver Is Jayden Reed? (NFL)
Reed was one of the most versatile athletes in the nation. In his last two years as a Spartan, he posted after 1,600 yards receiving and 15 touchdowns. He also returned two punts last year giving him special teams value. Despite his size, he plays bigger and has great hands to make contested catches.
Reed brings a whole lot of explosiveness to the receiver room in Green Bay which should complement Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs fantastically. Reed does a lot of things well when diving into his tape and scouting report. Playing in the slot role on the offense will be his best bet for personal and team success.
What is even crazier about Reed is that he doesn’t fit the mold of players GM Brian Gutekunst likes to draft. Gutekunst likes big players. Christian Watson is huge and fast. It was no surprise the Packers wanted him. Reed is a smaller player. While he is on the bigger side of many of the slot receivers in this draft, he is smaller than the players the Packers usually draft. This shows fans what the front office thinks of this player. I would also not be surprised if Rich Bisaccia loved his special teams tape and pushed for him as well.
