One of the most interesting position battles in Green Bay Packers training camp was the competition of the third running back role. In 2022, that role was largely filled by Patrick Taylor who has a reputation for being a reliable receiving back and a good special teams contributor. Going into the preseason, it was a wide open race between Taylor, Tyler Goodson, and 2023 seventh round pick Lew Nichols III.
But then the first preseason game happened and 2023 undrafted free agent Emanuel Wilson outshone everybody with six carries for 111 yards and two touchdowns. Wilson performed well in each of the next two preseason games and won the third running back job.

Taylor was cut but re-signed to the practice squad. He was actually elevated to the game roster for the Packers’ 38-20 Week One win over the Chicago Bears while Wilson was a healthy inactive. Taylor had five carries for 22 yards in the win.
Nichols and Goodson, however, were cut with injury settlements. Yesterday, it was reported that Goodson had found a new team.
Former Green Bay Packers Running Back Tyler Goodson Signs with the Indianapolis Colts
On Tuesday, the Indianapolis Colts posted on Twitter (X) that they had signed Goodson along with two other players:
We have signed C Jack Anderson, RB Tyler Goodson and TE Jordan Murray to the practice squad and released RB Jason Huntley, TE Johnny Lumpkin and WR Mike Strachan from the practice squad.

The Colts, of course, have had quite the dramatic offseason when it comes to the running back position. Former Wisconsin Badgers running back Jonathan Taylor, the NFL rushing leader in 2021, started the season on the PUP list after demanding a trade following owner Jim Irsay’s comments about paying running backs.
Taylor was not traded and will play in the Week Five, the first week he is eligible to come off of the PUP list. However, running back Evan Hull was injured in Indianapolis’ Week One 31-21 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. As a result, he was placed on injured reserve while Jake Funk (another running back) was elevated from their practice squad.
Goodson will take Funk’s spot on the practice squad.
