NFL: The Green Bay Packers are headed into the 2023 season with, what feels like, a new era of football. The Packers have moved on from many key veterans who have been the team’s foundation for years. Most notably Aaron Rodgers, Randall Cobb, Allen Lazard, Mason Crosby will all be playing football elsewhere in 2023 and beyond. That means that Jordan Love and his young core around him will be the face of the franchise for the foreseeable future. That also means a new backup quarterback will be in town, and it was made official today who that will be.
Green Bay Packers Officially Name Sean Clifford As QB2 In Green Bay (NFL)
Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur confirmed what many fans already believed to be true: Rookie Sean Clifford, a fifth-round pick out of Penn State, will be the team’s backup quarterback behind Jordan Love in 2023.
“I think it’s safe to say Sean is our No. 2 quarterback,” LaFleur said. “A lot of it is just his mental makeup. You saw it in the Cincinnati game in terms of his ability to rebound. The game’s not too big for him.”
During recent two-minute drills in games and practice, Clifford has been “calm, cool, and collected.” His field goal drive before the half against the New England Patriots was impressive.
A total of 33 of 45 passes were completed by Clifford during two preseason games, resulting in 345 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions.
Sean Clifford Has Earned The Backup Job In Green Bay
As Clifford has played well for the Packers this preseason, he would be ready to step in if something were to happen to Love during the season.
His first preseason performance included 20 of 26 passes for 208 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. For several seasons, he was the starting quarterback for Penn State. There is also no threat that Clifford will replace Love either, and the Packers want a smooth transition at quarterback.
The Packers hope Clifford will not have to play any regular season downs. He can, however, step into the regular season if he is needed.
After the game against New England, he said to the media, “Being able to come out here and protect the football but still push the ball downfield, I was proud of our guys.” He also mentioned, “First and foremost, I’ve got to give it to the O-line. I was so comfy back there today. It was really nice to be back there with those guys. I thought they did a hell of a job and allowed me to then really feel good, be able to push the ball down the field.”
