There is a real chance that wide receiver Christian Watson will not play this coming Sunday when the Green Bay Packers take on the Los Angeles Rams on the road. Watson suffered an ankle injury in Week 3’s 31-29 loss to the Minnesota Vikings at home.
Watson’s injury added a sour note to the Packers’ loss to a divisional rival just as Green Bay had also just gotten back quarterback Jordan Love from a two-game absence.
Will Dontayvion Wicks have a big game in Week 5 amid Christian Watson’s absence?
With Watson out with an injury, someone from the Packers’ wide receiver room is bound to get more looks.
“Packers WR Dontayvion Wicks is the one-for-one replacement for the injured Christian Watson for as long as Watson is out,” said NFL insider Dan Graziano of ESPN.
“The roles for Romeo Doubs and Jayden Reed aren’t likely to change, but Wicks is a big-play guy whom the Packers think is dangerous with the ball in his hands. Jordan Love also likes throwing to him. I could see Wicks being a big part of the Packers’ offense in the short term, and maybe even playing well enough to see his role expand at Watson’s expense once the latter is healthy.”
Wicks only got seven targets in Weeks 2 and 3 when the Packers went run-heavy with Malik Willis starting in lieu of Love. When Love returned in Week 4, Wicks got 13 targets which he turned into 78 receiving yards and two touchdowns on five receptions.
Wicks’ individual outlook for Week 5 seems promising, with Watson out and Love likely feeling better. Plus, the Rams have one of the worst defenses in the league, allowing 28.8 points and 385.3 total yards per game – both 31st in the NFL overall.
